Are you looking for a quick and affordable way to refresh your home decor? When it comes to home renovations one of the biggest sticking points isn’t the lack of ideas. Trust me, I have a list a mile long. The biggest barrier is budget or lack thereof.
What’s a girl to do when there’s not a money tree in sight? Well, in my opinion, one of the best ways to refresh your home on a budget is paint! I’m not necessarily talking full blown paint job. I’m talking about creating smaller pops of color that add dimension and depth.
When you add little moments of color, texture or wallpaper to your home it can really pull a space together and give it a designer look. For example, in this kitchen we started out with a neutral palette of white after painting over all the red that was originally there.
WHere to Start
I find starting with a blank canvas of white, if you’re able, is a great place to build upon. Especially when you move into a new home. It gives you a chance to get to know the house before making big design choices.
After a few months the kitchen was asking for more. This island was in need of a dark color to hide all those little footprints on the wall below the counter. We used one of my absolute favorite deep green colors that pulled the grey from the counters and meshed so well with the honey cabinets.
How to Make Accent Paint Look Purposeful
Once the island was painted we decided to put the same color on the door leading to the garage to help draw the eye around the room. I find that incorporating the color in a couple spots if that’s an option really helps the accent color feel like it’s meant to be there. Even if you add the color in the form of pillow, curtains or other items in the room.
In the end these small pops of color gave the kitchen depth and somehow it took on a bit of a midcentury feel, which I love! This project only took a quart of paint to accomplish and a few hours of my time. Low budget and big impact, my favorite kind of home project!
I’ve included the green paint as well as the white on my Top 6 Designer Paint Colors Guide. Get it here! And don’t forget I’m available in person and virtually to help you with your next renovation and design project!
