This green smoothie recipe is a go-to in our house. In fact I drink pretty much the same thing every morning for break fast.
why drink green smoothies
Smoothies are an excellent way to get a daily dose of greens and fiber without having to eat plates and plates of vegetables. That’s why I love making this smoothie recipe for my kids. They love it and I love that they’re getting at least a 1/2 cup of spinach.
What’s in this smoothie recipe
This green smoothie consists of berries which are a great source of antioxidants. I include spinach for its slew of vitamins and minerals including calcium and magnesium. You can also add flax seeds for omega 3 fatty acids as well as hemp seeds for a boost of protein. I also use homemade coconut cashew milk that I make in our Almond Cow (which I LOVE).
Should I use Protein Powder?
I personally like to add protein powder to my smoothies because it helps me stay satiated. You also want to be careful with what kinds of protein powder you’re using, lots of them contain fillers, sugars and heavy metals. This is plant based protein powder I used. But if you want to save some money skip the protein powder all together and use a nut butter plus some hemp seeds to get an extra protein boost.
When should I make this smoothie recipe?
I would recommend drinking it for breakfast or before noon. This smoothie isn’t loaded with sugar so you could have it in the afternoon but the berries might spike your glucose just a tad. But I do love to serve this when we have breakfast for dinner on our weekly meal plan. If you’re interested in how-to meal plan checkout my post and youtube video here.
When I make this for the kids I like to serve it in insulated cups like these to keep it cold and to alleviate any spills!
