One question I often get asked is, how do I choose the right size rug for my space? It can be tricky to figure out what size rug you need and can cost you a lot of trips returning misfit rugs if you don’t know what you’re doing.
But don’t fret, there is a method to choosing the right size rug for your space and once you know it you’ll never have issues again! I meant it when I said it, when it comes to rugs, size matters.
No one wants to sit on a dining chair that is half on and half off a rug. Am I right? When choosing a rug for your dining room make sure there is at least 24-36 inches around the perimeter of the dining table. That way the chair legs will still be on the rug when pulled out.

If you’re doing a table with benches on the sides be sure to leave at least 8-10″. No matter what, always size up if you’re not sure. While the price can jump (a lot) from one size to the next. A rug that is too small can dwarf a space and make it look unplanned and awkward.
When you’re selecting a rug for your living room make sure you measure your sofa. Once you have your sofa size include at least 6 inches from arm to edge of rug. You have a choice to make in the living room, have all the furniture sit on the rug or front legs on back legs off.
A large rug with all the furniture completely on it give a very high-end lux look and is extra cozy. A rug that goes partly under the furniture gives a more minimal look without weighing down the space.
What about different shaped rugs? Circle rugs are great if you have a circle table and occasionally a space might need an oval rug depending on the flow of the room.
A circle rug is also great in front of a fireplace or sitting area with 2-4 accent chairs and a coffee table in the middle. The circle welcomes everyone to sit and chat.
Now for the bedroom. If you don’t have a rug under your bed you need to put one there stat. Rugs really give a room a finished look. In general you’ll want a 8×10 rug under a queen bed or a 9×12 under a king.
Similar to the living room rug you’ll want to decide whether to have the rug completely under the nightstand and bed or just under the bed. When going under the bed only leave about 4 inches from the front of your night tables to the rug edge.

Otherwise you’ll want about 24″ along either side of the bed and 12 inches at the foot. Another great (money saving) idea is to put runners on either side of the bed! You have the luxury of a rug under your feet when you get out of bed without the high price tag!
Rugs are one of the best ways to soften and complete a space. So if you don’t have a rugs under your furniture what are you waiting for?!?! I’ve linked some of my favorite timeless rugs above (just click the photo of the rug you like).. All of these rugs come with a reasonable price tag too. Oh and for the record…get a rug pad. They make a world of a difference!!
