One of my top tips for anyone trying to redecorate on a budget is to shop your own house. It’s absolutely the cheapest option because you’re not spending any money! Plus it’s environmentally friendly.
But what do I mean by shop your house? It’s pretty much exactly as it sounds. Pick a room to decorate then determine a color scheme and vibe. Not sure on a vibe? Take my “what’s your home design vibe” quiz to figure out the best vibe for you! Then go through other rooms in your house and find pieces to use in the “new” room.
Follow these steps to shop your house like a pro:
1// with your vibe and colors in mind go to each room in your house and pull things that fit within those boundaries
2// remove anything from the room your working on that doesn’t fit with the new decor
3// rearrange furniture, this doesn’t mean you have to change the whole space. Moving a chair to another corner of the room or adding a side table can make all the difference
4// hang “new” artwork. Keep in mind you can place the art in different places or heights. Especially if the previous art wasn’t working.
5// accessorize, hang curtains and place throw pillows
my top tip for decorating by shopping your home is…
6// remember there are no rules! This is your home, don’t stress about whether you’re doing it “right”. If it feels right to you then it’s perfect.
You may have messed up a few of the other rooms in your home during this process. No stress, trust the process! The good news is you can use these tips to redecorate those rooms next. You’d be surprised at the difference moving art or accessories from one room to the next can make. Not to mention redecorating by shopping your own home can save you hundreds of dollars!
Happy decorating!
