Decorating a Living Room can feel like a daunting task if you don’t know what you’re doing. I’ve met with clients that tell me they’ve either been thinking of redecorating their living room for years and due to the overwhelm they kept putting it off or they started redecorating their space and nothing seemed to work together.
Both of these living room decorating dilemmas can be solved if you follow a few key steps. These living room decorating steps apply no matter the size, shape or style of your living room. Consider this your one stop shop for living room redecorating that will give you that designer look you’ve been aiming to achieve.
01 take measurements

Yes, I know, taking measurements may seem like a lot of work, but trust me when I say you shouldn’t do anything beforehand. Having living room dimensions will help you when you’re shopping for rugs, furniture, and even curtains. You want to measure all the walls, length and height as well as windows and any other structures in the room like fireplaces or built-ins. One of my favorite tools for measuring is this digital tape measure, it makes measuring (especially alone) so easy! Mark all your measurements down in your notes section on your phone for easy access.
02 Determine your style

One of the biggest things you can do to create a cohesive designer living room is determine the style upfront. A big pitfall I see is when someone just buys everything they like but none of it works together. Do you prefer a modern farmhouse aesthetic or are you more of a traditional space. Look to Pinterest for ideas and pin at least 10-20 in the style you like to keep you on track. A piece of advice I like to give my clients when they’re trying to figure this out is to take into account the time period and style of their house. A mid century modern rancher will shine with midcentury modern nods in way of low furniture and wood tones.
03 determine a color scheme

Determine a cohesive color palette and work your textiles, paint and art around that. Make sure to consider the finishes whether brass, black or silver (lamps, drawer pulls and curtain rods) as well. I like to opt for one neutral whether gray or beige, one main color like blue and one finish like black. If you can stick to a determined palette it will be much easier to shop. 04 start from the bottom up

When decorating a living room a good place to start is with the rug. Now that you have the color palette selected you will need to determine the rug size. Checkout our rug size guide here. After choosing your rug it’s a good idea to select the larger pieces of furniture, then the art and finally the accessories.
05 Details matter

The final stage of your living room decorating project is all about the details. Make sure you address the walls with artwork and curtains. The walls are a good place to add your personal touch. Are you a musician or music appreciator? Hang a few guitars intentionally on the walls to add a special touch. Adding personalized accessories will help your house reflect you and your personality. And finally add some greenery, whether it’s plants, small indoor trees or flowers. These details are so important and are what I truly believe make a house feel like a home.
