I’m sure you’ve heard of EMFs somewhere over the last few years. With the rise in 5G across the country it has become a hot topic and for good reason. EMFs are a big part of the world we live in. I like to think of EMFs like I think of car pollution. We need cars to get around and up until recently the result of us driving cars was some offgasing and pollution. EMF’s are similar in that they are the pollution from appliances and things like WIFI. We’ll take a closer look below but I just wanted to paint a picture that helped me solidify the idea in my head.
What are EMFs?
EMF stands for Electro Magnetic Frequencies. EMFs are natural occurring energetic waves that radiate off of things that produce energy. There are natural EMFs, such as the waves that radiate off of the sun and there are “manmade” EMF’s like cell towers and power lines. The energetic waves are also referred to as radiation. Consider EMFs like invisible electronic toxic pollution. We cannot control the power lines and cell towers, so what can we do to protect ourselves from EMFs in our home and our personal space?
Levels of EMFs
There are two levels of EMFs. There are high frequency EMFs like X-rays and Gamma Rays. Then there are low frequency EMFs like microwaves and cell phones. Remember, this is the very simple ‘EMFs for dummies’ version. The levels and categories of EMFs are more broad than this but for our intent and purpose this should do.
Are EMFs dangerous to Humans?
In studies it is shown that high radiation can damage human DNA and contribute to cell mutations and cancer (source). There is speculation as to whether exposure to low dose EMFs pose any danger to humans. However, if we consider chronic exposure even in small doses over a long period of time, it would be easy to speculate that that exposure could cause some form of long term damage (this is just my personal non scientific opinion).
What are the effects of EMF exposure?
Putting the larger risks of EMF’s aside and the argument as to whether small doses are harmful or not, let’s consider the daily effects of EMFs. To me, these effects are damaging in and of themselves, especially if we are trying to live a clean chemical free wellness lifestyle. Some effects of daily EMF exposure are-

The argument still exists as to whether low dose EMF exposure poses any risks to humans. But let’s consider this argument from a wholistic perspective. If you live and work in an environment that uses WIFI you are being exposed daily to low dose EMFs. Then when you go home, if you don’t shut off your WIFI every night while you sleep, you are still being exposed. Now let’s consider that low doses of EMF exposure can cause sleep disruption. Guys and gals, sleep incredibly important for our health and wellbeing. In fact, studies have shown that long term sleep disruptions can lead to cancer (source). Do you see where I’m going here? If we can’t point directly to EMFs and cancer we certainly can make a connection.
How to Protect Yourself From EMF exposure
Now that all of the EMF bad news is out of the way let’s talk about the good news. You can easily take steps to protect yourself and your home from EMFs. There are low cost solutions as well as some more extreme high budget solutions. I’m going to list some of my favorite EMF protective solutions below. While this may seem overwhelming I can assure you doing one of these things listed below and getting started is way better than doing nothing! So let’s take this one step at a time.

Steps to Blocking EMFs in Your Home
Yes, there are products you can use to block EMFs in your home but if you are on a budget here are a few things you can do without buying anything! Remove and or unplug any appliances in your bedrooms while you sleep (here’s looking at you bedroom TV).
If I can recommend one thing that will ABSOLUTELY make an impact it’s turning off WIFI while you sleep. On average that’s going to cut your exposure by 6 hours and like we discussed 6 hours over time really adds up! If your car is wifi enabled or has a hot spot, turn it off when you don’t need it (or forever). Keep your phone away from you and off your body. I know this is a tough one, I’m a phone in the back pocket girl myself which I why I eventually invested (amazon points!) in a safesleeve. Ground yourself by standing barefoot in the grass and spending some time in nature.
Worried About EMFs?
Stop worrying about EMFs. I know that seems strange considering the points made above. But here’s the deal, we live in a world that utilizes EMF producing appliances. Taking steps to protect yourself as much as possible is a great idea! However spending time worrying about it is not, stress is probably way worse for your body than the EMFs you are encountering. My advice, be proactive, understand what’s going on and how to protect yourself then go on and live a happy healthy life.
