Yoga and sleep go hand in hand, yet I hear so many people talking about their sleep issues without a mention of yoga! Today I want to change that for you, even if you’re not a yogi.
Yoga Is For Everyone
Yes, yoga is for everyone…including you! Yoga is for meat eaters, drinkers, smokers, and midnight tokers. You do not have to be a fruitaterian (is that a thing?) to do yoga. You just have to be open to doing it and let go of any preconcieved notions or expectations. Starting yoga can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be, especially if you start with this simple bedtime yoga routine.
Benefits of Yoga
The benefits of yoga are many, so I’ll just highlight a few. One of which being that it can help you get better sleep! Additionally, yoga calms the mind and reduces stress. Yoga can also help to detoxify the body and lower blood pressuer (SOURCE). Notice I haven’t even mentioned that it can improve flexibility and strength!
where to do Bedtime yoga for sleep
When you start your evening yoga practice you’ll want to set the space. Whoa whoa whoa, don’t back out now, this doesn’t mean you need a yoga studio. A quiet corner in your bedroom will do or anywhere in your home for that matter. If you’re just starting out you don’t even need a mat, you can practice on a rug or carpet. This is the yoga mat I use and have loved for years. In the evenings its important to dim the lights (even when you’re not doing yoga) to set yourself up for a restful nights sleep. I like to run my essential oil diffuser and maybe light a stick of palo santo while I practice. You can checkout some of my favorite oils for yoga here. Or you could just light a candle. Either way be intentional about setting up your space before you get started. Yoga is self care and it should feel that way.
Bedtime Yoga For sleep Practice
This is a fifteen minute yoga practice that will set you up for a wonderful nights sleep. I recommend doing this routine right before you head to bed. Doing a stimulating activity (like watching tv) might negate the intended effects.
